Founded in 2018, the International Collaborative on Costs, Outcomes and Needs in Care (ICCONIC) consists of 11 partners from North America, Europe and the Pacific who are committed to answering critical questions about this understudied patient population. Drawing on regional and national data, the Collaborative is creating foundational research that will provide key policy insights on how to address rising costs while simultaneously improving HNHC patient outcomes.
Across health systems, high-need, high-cost (HNHC) patients tend to constitute a relatively small segment of the population while accounting for a disproportionately large share of healthcare expenditures. Little is known, however, about how patterns of healthcare utilization, spending, and outcomes for HNHC patients vary across health systems.
ICCONIC hopes to develop a innovative methodology to compare the cost, utilisation and outcomes of high-need, high-cost populations in different health systems.
