25 March, 2026|in25 aniversary Atlas VPM, General

Atlas VPM marks 25 years of studying variability in medical practice within the National Health System.

25 Years of Atlas VPM. 25 years studying health systems. 25 years evaluating the National Health System. 25 years generating information to support health decision-making.

The Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice (Atlas VPM), coordinated by Enrique Bernal-Delgado, marks 25 years of dedicated work analyzing health systems. That’s 25 years studying variability in medical practice, 25 years evaluating the National Health System (SNS), and 25 years generating key information to support health decision-making.

Since its inception, the Atlas VPM has worked to analyze and highlight unjustified variations in healthcare, thereby contributing to improving the efficiency, equity, and quality of healthcare services. This project is led by the Data Science for Health Services and Policy Research group at the Aragonese Institute of Health Sciences (IACS), establishing itself as a leading authority in the field of health evaluation in Spain.

Over the past 25 years, Atlas VPM has provided rigorous evidence that has helped identify inequalities in clinical practice and promote a more appropriate use of healthcare resources, always with the goal of improving care for the public.

⇒ To mark this anniversary, various initiatives have been launched that reflect the project’s evolution and future. Among them are the launch of a new logo, the redesign of the website, and a visual update of the Atlas VPM itself. Additionally, a commemorative video highlighting the project’s history and impact will be presented, and special events will be held throughout the year to share this milestone with the scientific and healthcare community.

This 25th anniversary is not only an opportunity to look back, but also to reaffirm the Atlas VPM’s commitment to the continuous improvement of the National Health System, focusing on the generation of useful, accessible, and decision-oriented knowledge.
