The aim of this project is to assess effective access to healthcare for patients with breast and colorectal cancer by identifying and analysing the care pathways they follow, taking into account all relevant waiting times and the occurrence of adverse health outcomes.
To this end, the project uses process analysis to assess effective access to healthcare, waiting times and adverse outcomes. The specific objectives include identifying care pathways, assessing discrepancies between actual practice and protocols, predicting the impact of these discrepancies on health, and identifying top-performing providers.
Furthermore, the project promotes the development of a replicable technological infrastructure and an interactive dashboard to facilitate management and decision-making regarding the appropriate use of resources.
Improving effectiveness and reducing waiting times within the National Health Service (NHS) by translating the findings and knowledge generated from the study of the care pathway for patients with breast and colorectal cancer into health policies.
The project’s innovation lies in an epistemological approach that considers the care pathway as a risk classifier at an individual level, the use of process mining, and a federated approach to big data analysis, highlighting the possibility of incorporating new nodes and the involvement of relevant stakeholders in translating results into policy.
This project aims to address the needs of the Ministry of Health and the Autonomous Communities by ensuring that findings are translated into policy, helping to supplement the available evidence for establishing guarantees on maximum waiting times, and implementing a scorecard to support decision-making; whilst also contributing to the development of the National Health Data Space (ENDS) and promoting the principles of open science.
